Sugar Sands

Sugar Sands Beach, nestled between the coastal villages of Craster and Boulmer, lives up to its name with its pristine golden sands and tranquil setting.

While the sand might not be sugar, its crunchy texture and pale-golden hue create a picturesque setting at the foot of low grassy cliffs, bordered by rocky outcrops and rock pools that add to its allure. Stretching approximately 100 meters, the beach is backed by dunes, offering both space and a cosy feel, with some shelter from the wind.

To reach Sugar Sands requires a bit of a hike, which ever direction you're approaching from, but the journey is well worth it. Whether you're coming from Howick or Boulmer, or driving up towards the dunes from Longhoughton, you'll find yourself rewarded with a peaceful, secluded haven, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Parking is available close to the beach, with an honesty box system in place at Howdiemont via Low Steads farm.

The allure of Sugar Sands lies not only in its pristine beauty but also in its serene atmosphere. With clean sand, rolling dunes, and sweeping views of the North Sea, it's a haven for those seeking some quiet time by the seaside. Whether you're building sandcastles, beachcombing for lost treasures, or simply unwinding to the sound of crashing waves, Sugar Sands offers a wonderful escape into nature.

From above, Sugar Sands presents a stunning vista, with its golden shoreline framed by the dramatic waters of the North Sea and grassy dunes adorned with hardy plants and seabirds. Exploring the beach reveals an abundance of shells, frosted sea glass, and smooth stones, while the distant silhouette of Dunstanburgh Castle adds a touch of drama to the horizon.

Located just south of Alnwick off the A1, Sugar Sands is easily accessible from Northumberland's well-signed coastal routes, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its wild beauty and peaceful charm. Whether you're wandering along its pristine expanse or admiring the view from the dunes, Sugar Sands is one of best examples of Northumberland's unspoiled shoreline.
